Dental Fillings

Modern tooth-coloured fillings restore your teeth completely — with no silver mercury amalgam, and no visible signs of treatment.

About Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are the most common restorative treatment in dentistry, used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay, cracks, or fractures. At Manya Dental, we use tooth-coloured composite resin fillings as our standard material — they are natural-looking, mercury-free, and bond directly to the tooth structure, requiring less removal of healthy tooth material compared to older amalgam fillings.

Early treatment of cavities is essential. What begins as a small area of decay can progress rapidly, eventually reaching the nerve and requiring root canal treatment — or, in severe cases, extraction. Filling a cavity while it is small is faster, more comfortable, and significantly less expensive than treating it at an advanced stage.

If you have old silver amalgam fillings that are deteriorating, showing signs of cracking, or causing discomfort, Manya Dental can replace them with modern composite or ceramic alternatives that restore both the strength and appearance of your teeth.

How It Works

1

Cavity Detection & Assessment

Your dentist examines your teeth visually and with X-rays to identify cavities and assess their depth. Small cavities caught early require minimal treatment.

2

Local Anaesthesia

The area is numbed with local anaesthesia. For very small cavities in areas that are not sensitive, anaesthesia may not always be necessary.

3

Decay Removal

All decayed tooth material is removed using a dental drill and hand instruments. The cavity is cleaned and shaped to receive the filling.

4

Filling Placement

The composite resin is applied in layers, each hardened with a special curing light. The material is built up to fully restore the tooth's original shape.

5

Polishing & Bite Check

The filling is carefully shaped and polished to match the natural contours of the tooth. The bite is adjusted to ensure perfect comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about dental fillings at Manya Dental.

How long do composite fillings last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, composite fillings typically last 7–10 years. Large fillings or those in high-stress areas (molars) may need replacement sooner. Ceramic (inlay/onlay) restorations last significantly longer.

Is getting a filling painful?

With local anaesthesia, the procedure is essentially painless. You may feel vibration or pressure but no pain. Mild sensitivity in the treated tooth for a day or two afterward is normal.

How do I know if I have a cavity?

Early cavities often have no symptoms — they are detected on X-rays or by your dentist during a check-up. Later-stage cavities may cause sensitivity to sweet, hot, or cold foods, or a visible discolouration in the tooth. Regular 6-monthly check-ups are the best way to catch cavities early.

Can old silver fillings be replaced with tooth-coloured ones?

Yes. Old amalgam fillings that are deteriorating, fractured, or causing concern can be safely removed and replaced with composite or ceramic alternatives. Your dentist at Manya Dental will assess whether replacement is clinically indicated.

What happens if a cavity is left untreated?

Untreated decay progresses deeper into the tooth, eventually reaching the pulp (nerve) and causing significant pain and infection. At this stage, a root canal — or extraction — is typically required. Early treatment is always simpler and less costly.

Other treatments patients commonly combine with or consider alongside dental fillings.
